Painting Pictures

Painting Pictures creates a shared experience of Shakespeare’s language between learners, asking them to develop and share the mental images conjured in their minds when engaging with Shakespeare’s use of imagery.
Instructions to Learners

Begin by asking learners to sit in chairs opposite each other.
Instruct learners to deliver their lines whilst remaining seated. Every time they reach an image in the text, they must stop the scene and describe the image they had in mind to their scene partner. Their scene partner should then share how they imagined that same image when they heard the text.

Ensure you ask learners to take their time and describe the images conjured in their minds with depth and detail. This is meant to share their experience of the image with their scene partner.

Assure learners that they can use pop. culture, Television and Film references to facilitate discussions of how the image appears to them if necessary. What is important is how they see that image in their minds eye and fully evolving it to affect the delivery of the text, giving the images meaning in performance.

Discussion should be encouraged between learners; as a facilitator, it can help to prompt learners to develop their images if necessary.
