Verse or Proes

This tool utilises the format of the First Folio presentation within the Cue Script,
to identify whether learners’ lines are in verse or prose.

Instructions to Learners

Notify learners that the writing style – verse or prose- can inform their character choices and may provide additional context for the circumstances.

Instruct learners to look at their Cue Scripts and pay attention to the left and right hand margins.

With verse, the first word of every line is capitalised, and the right-hand margin is uneven.

For prose, the first letter in the left-hand margin will not be in capitals, and the text runs margin to margin.

Verse can reflect that a character is of a higher social standing and / or the stakes of the scene are high, and the character is facing a challenge.

Prose, on the other hand, if used to give out information or to make jokes. It can also be used to show a character is in disguise or from a lower social standing.
